Slocum recognizes seven graduating high school seniors for academic achievement and service to our community

College scholarships awarded to future health professionals

EUGENE, Oregon – The Board of the Slocum Research & Education Foundation has announced seven graduating high school seniors were awarded a $1,500 college scholarship on May 12, 2021. Funded by a donation from the physicians and surgeons at the Slocum Center for Orthopedics and Sports Medicine, the Slocum Foundation Scholarship Program recognizes well-rounded high school seniors who plan to pursue a career in healthcare, health-related research, public, or community health.

“This year meant a lot our Board – recognizing students who spent their final year in remote learning during a global pandemic” commented Dr. Brick Lantz, orthopedic surgeon at the Slocum Center for Orthopedics & Sports Medicine, and President of the Slocum Foundation Board. “The 2021 scholarship recipients went above and beyond, demonstrating resilience and grit during these tough times” continued Lantz.

The 2021 Slocum Scholarship recipients come from five different high schools within Lane County, and for the first time, were all young women. “We are always impressed by the caliber of applicants” reflected Marian Blankenship, Vice President of Community Strategy at PacificSource Health Plans, and long-time board member of the Slocum Foundation. “But this year, it’s really exciting to see our most competitive applicants were all females who will be the next generation of women leaders in science and medicine.”
