Bursitis of the Shoulder

Shoulder Bursitis: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment

Bursitis of the shoulder is a painful condition that occurs when the bursa, a small fluid-filled sac, becomes inflamed in the shoulder joint. The bursa acts as a cushion between the bones, tendons, and muscles, reducing friction and allowing for smooth movement. However, repetitive motion or injury can cause the bursa to become irritated or swollen, leading to bursitis.

Common symptoms of shoulder bursitis include pain, tenderness, and swelling in the shoulder area. The pain may worsen with movement, making it difficult to perform everyday activities or participate in sports. In some cases, the shoulder may also feel stiff or weak.

Treatment for shoulder bursitis typically involves rest, ice or heat therapy, pain medication, and physical therapy to help strengthen the muscles and improve range of motion. In severe cases, a doctor may recommend corticosteroid injections or, in rare instances, surgery.

If you are experiencing persistent shoulder pain or suspect you may have bursitis, it is important to consult with a healthcare professional for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment plan.
