Fracture of Upper End of Ulna

Olecranon Fracture: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment

A fracture of the upper end of the ulna, also known as the olecranon fracture, is a break in the bony prominence at the back of the elbow. This condition often occurs due to a fall on an outstretched hand or a direct blow to the elbow. Symptoms of an olecranon fracture include immediate pain, swelling, tenderness, and limited range of motion in the affected arm. In severe cases, the fractured bone may pierce through the skin, leading to an open fracture.

Treatment for an olecranon fracture usually involves immobilization of the elbow using a splint, cast, or sling to allow for healing. In some cases, surgery may be necessary to realign the fractured bone and secure it with screws or plates. Physical therapy is often recommended to restore strength, flexibility, and function to the affected arm.

Without proper treatment, an untreated olecranon fracture can lead to long-term complications, such as stiffness, weakness, and instability in the elbow joint. Therefore, it is crucial to seek medical attention promptly if you suspect an olecranon fracture.
