Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment of Hip Implant Complications
Hip replacement surgery is generally safe and effective, but like any surgical procedure, it carries the risk of complications. Some patients may experience issues with the artificial joint over time, including implant loosening, wear, dislocation, infection, or inflammation. These complications may occur soon after surgery or develop years later as the implant ages.
Common signs of a hip replacement complication include new or worsening hip pain, swelling, stiffness, instability, or a clicking or popping sensation in the joint. In some cases, there may be redness, warmth, or drainage around the surgical site—possible signs of infection.
Diagnosis involves a physical exam and imaging, such as X-rays, to evaluate the position and condition of the implant. Blood tests or joint aspiration may be used to check for infection.
Treatment depends on the cause and severity of the complication. Some issues may improve with medications, physical therapy, or activity modification. More serious complications, such as implant failure or joint infection, may require revision surgery to remove or replace the original implant.
