Joint Infection: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment
A joint infection, also known as septic arthritis, occurs when bacteria or other harmful organisms enter a joint and cause inflammation. This can happen through the bloodstream, after surgery, or from a nearby wound or injury. Joint infections are serious medical conditions that require prompt treatment to avoid permanent damage.
Symptoms of a joint infection typically come on quickly and may include severe joint pain, swelling, warmth, redness, and difficulty moving the joint. Fever and fatigue are also common. Infections most often affect large joints like the knee, hip, or shoulder, but any joint can be involved.
Diagnosis includes a physical exam and imaging to assess the joint, along with lab tests to check for signs of infection. In most cases, fluid is drawn from the joint (aspiration) and tested to identify the cause and guide treatment.
Treatment usually involves antibiotics to eliminate the infection, often given through an IV. In some cases, surgery may be needed to clean the joint and remove infected tissue. Delayed or inadequate treatment can lead to joint destruction, making early diagnosis critical.
