Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment of Knee Fractures
A knee fracture is a break in one of the bones that make up the knee joint, most commonly the lower end of the femur (thigh bone), the upper part of the tibia (shin bone), or the kneecap (patella). These fractures can result from high-impact trauma such as a fall, car accident, or sports injury.
Symptoms of a knee fracture include sudden pain, swelling, bruising, and difficulty moving or bearing weight on the leg. In more severe cases, the joint may appear deformed or unstable, and walking may be impossible.
Diagnosis is made through a physical exam and imaging such as X-rays or CT scans to determine the location, type, and severity of the fracture. Common types include tibial plateau fractures, distal femur fractures, and supracondylar fractures. These injuries may involve the joint surface and require careful treatment to restore knee stability and function.
Treatment depends on the type of fracture and may range from bracing and limited weight-bearing to surgery using plates, screws, or rods. Recovery often includes physical therapy to restore strength and mobility.
