Multiple Fractures of the Pelvis: Symptoms, Treatment, and Recovery
Multiple pelvic fractures occur when two or more areas of the pelvic ring are broken. These injuries are usually the result of high-energy trauma such as a car accident, fall from a height, or significant crush injury. Because the pelvis protects vital organs and supports major blood vessels and nerves, these fractures can be complex and require urgent medical attention.
Symptoms include severe pelvic or groin pain, difficulty standing or walking, swelling, bruising, and in some cases, numbness or internal bleeding. The pelvis may feel unstable or painful with movement, and other injuries are often present.
Diagnosis is made using physical examination and imaging such as X-rays or CT scans to determine the type and pattern of the fracture. Pelvic fractures are often classified as stable or unstable, depending on whether the ring structure remains intact or is disrupted.
Treatment depends on the severity and stability of the fracture. Stable fractures may be treated with rest, protected weight-bearing, and physical therapy. Unstable or displaced fractures often require surgical fixation with plates, screws, or external devices to realign and stabilize the bones.
At Slocum, our trauma and orthopedic team specializes in managing complex fractures, including pelvic injuries, with the goal of restoring function and supporting a safe recovery.
