Sever’s Disease: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment
Sever’s Disease, also known as calcaneal apophysitis, is a common condition that affects children and adolescents who are active and involved in sports. It is an inflammation of the growth plate in the heel bone, called the apophysis, which is not fully developed until the age of 14 to 16. This condition occurs when repetitive stress is placed on the growth plate, resulting in pain and discomfort in the heel area. Symptoms include heel pain, especially during or after physical activity, limping, tenderness, and swelling. Sever’s Disease is more prevalent in boys than girls and is often seen in children who participate in activities that involve running and jumping. It is usually self-limiting and resolves once the growth plate has fully fused. Treatment involves rest, ice, stretching exercises, and proper footwear. Seeking medical advice is recommended to manage symptoms and prevent complications.
