Lower Limb Nerve Injury

Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment of Lower Limb Nerve Injury

A lower limb nerve injury, also called a mononeuropathy of the lower limb, occurs when one of the nerves in the leg is damaged or compressed. This can involve the sciatic, femoral, peroneal, tibial, or other nerves. Causes may include trauma, prolonged pressure on a nerve, inflammation, or underlying medical conditions.

Symptoms vary depending on the nerve affected but often include pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness in part of the leg. These issues can interfere with walking, mobility, and daily activities.

Diagnosis typically involves a physical exam, review of medical history, and sometimes nerve conduction studies or imaging.

Treatment may include medications for pain and inflammation, physical therapy to restore strength and flexibility, and in some cases surgery to repair or decompress the nerve. Early recognition and management are important to prevent long-term complications and improve function.
