Treating Trigger Digit: Causes, Symptoms, and Solutions
Trigger digit, also known as stenosing tenosynovitis or trigger finger, is a common hand condition that causes painful finger movement. It occurs when the flexor tendon that controls finger movement becomes inflamed or irritated, leading to the finger getting stuck in a bent position. This condition commonly affects the thumb, ring finger, or middle finger and can cause discomfort, clicking or locking sensation, and limited finger mobility. Trigger digit is often caused by repetitive hand movements, such as gripping tools or using a keyboard extensively, as well as certain medical conditions like diabetes or rheumatoid arthritis. Treatment options for trigger digit include rest, splinting, hand exercises, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). In severe cases, corticosteroid injections or surgery may be recommended to relieve symptoms and restore normal finger function. Early diagnosis and proper management are crucial in preventing long-term complications and improving hand functionality.
