Capsulectomy

Capsulectomy: Surgical Removal of Breast Implant Capsule

Capsulectomy is a surgical procedure that involves the removal of the capsule that surrounds a breast implant. This procedure is usually performed in cases where the capsule has become thickened, contracted, or calcified, leading to pain, discomfort, or distortion of the breast. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia, and involves making an incision in the breast to access the implant and the surrounding capsule. The surgeon carefully removes the capsule, taking care not to damage the implant or the surrounding tissue. Once the capsule has been removed, the breast implant may be replaced, or the patient may choose to have the implant removed altogether. Recovery from a capsulectomy usually takes several weeks, during which time the patient may experience some discomfort, swelling, and bruising. However, most patients are able to return to their normal activities within a few weeks.
