A Legacy of Excellence: Slocum and University of Oregon Athletics
For over 50 years, Slocum Orthopedics has proudly served as the trusted orthopedic partner of University of Oregon Athletics. Our enduring relationship with the Ducks is built on a shared commitment to excellence, innovation, and teamwork – values that have defined Slocum’s approach to patient care since our founding by Dr. Donald Slocum in 1939.
The Roots of Our Partnership
The foundation of Slocum’s partnership with Oregon Athletics was laid by Dr. Donald Slocum himself, through his groundbreaking collaborations with legendary track coach Bill Bowerman. Together, they developed revolutionary training techniques and treatments that transformed the field of sports medicine. This spirit of innovation gave birth to Slocum’s sideline doctor program, which has become an integral part of our relationship with the University of Oregon.
A Tradition of Dedicated Care
Over the decades, Slocum’s sideline doctors have played a crucial role in supporting the health and success of Oregon’s student-athletes. Dr. Donald Jones, who served as the team orthopedist for nearly 40 years until his retirement in 2018, witnessed firsthand the incredible growth and success of Oregon Athletics. From the Independence Bowl in 1989 to the College Football Playoff in 2014, Dr. Jones provided expert care and guidance to countless athletes, setting a standard of compassion, integrity, and unwavering commitment to player well-being that continues to inspire our approach to sports medicine.
Carrying the Torch
Today, our current trio of sideline doctors – Dr. Lyle Jackson, Dr. Jeffrey Tuman, and Dr. Rudolf Hoellrich – carry on this proud tradition. As Oregonians with deep ties to the community, they understand the importance of the University of Oregon to the state and the role that athletics plays in bringing people together.
What sets Slocum’s sideline doctors apart is their team-oriented approach to care. By collaborating closely with coaches, trainers, sports psychologists, and other specialists, they provide comprehensive, personalized treatment plans that address each athlete’s unique needs and goals. This holistic approach ensures that Oregon’s student-athletes receive the highest level of care, both on and off the field.
A Unique Perspective
Dr. Lyle Jackson, who joined Slocum after a career as a mechanical engineer, brings a unique perspective to his role as a sideline doctor. He draws on his background in problem-solving and his passion for teamwork to help athletes overcome challenges and achieve their goals. As Dr. Jackson says, “The crux of it is knowing what the individual wants to achieve out of their problems, and hopefully being able to tailor their treatment [to] their expectations and what the goal is.”
Beyond Injury Treatment
The impact of Slocum’s partnership with Oregon Athletics extends beyond the treatment of injuries. Through their work, our sideline doctors have helped to foster a culture of resilience, perseverance, and excellence that has become synonymous with the University of Oregon. They have been there to celebrate the triumphs and console in the face of setbacks, serving as partners for generations of Duck athletes.
Dr. Hoellrich reflects on this rewarding experience: “For us, there has been no greater reward than contributing to such an extraordinary athletic program alongside this talented group of athletes and professionals.”
Looking to the Future
As the University of Oregon joins the Big Ten Conference, Slocum remains deeply committed to its partnership with Oregon Athletics. Our sideline doctors stand ready to support the next generation of Duck athletes as they take on new challenges and pursue new opportunities. Through countless changes and milestones, Slocum has been a constant presence in Oregon Athletics, providing unwavering support and expert care to the university’s student-athletes. From the early days of Dr. Slocum’s pioneering work to the cutting-edge treatments and techniques of today, we have been at the forefront of sports medicine, helping to set the standard for orthopedic care in the Pacific Northwest and beyond.
