Dr. Mildren’s Top Tips for Falling in Love with Running in Eugene
At Slocum Orthopedics, we’re passionate about helping our community Live in Motion – and that’s why we’re excited to share some wisdom from our very own Dr. Mark Mildren on how to make the most of your running journey in Eugene and beyond. As an avid runner and a proud member of our team, Dr. Mildren has learned a thing or two about embracing the joys of hitting the pavement. Here are his top tips for falling in love with running:
1. Embrace the TrackTown USA magic
“There’s nothing quite like running in the birthplace of TrackTown USA, following in the footsteps of legends like Steve Prefontaine. The energy and nostalgia surrounding this race are unmatched, so soak it all in and let it fuel your stride.”
2. Train smart, not just hard
“While logging those miles is crucial, don’t forget the power of cross-training. Mix things up with biking and swimming to give your joints a break and keep your workouts fresh. Aim for 2-3 runs per week, with a longer session on Saturday mornings (bonus points if you beat the kids out of bed!).”
3. Set goals, but don’t forget to have fun
“Whether you’re aiming for a specific time or just want to cross that finish line with a smile, setting goals can keep you motivated. Mine? A cool 3:30 marathon… and maintaining control of my bodily functions. Hey, it’s the little things!”
4. Rally your crew
“Running isn’t just a solo endeavor – it’s a community affair. Rope in your friends, family, and coworkers to join the fun. Trust me, there’s nothing like the camaraderie of conquering the miles together (or at least cheering each other on from the sidelines).”
5. Remember the “why”
“Running is a wonderful way to stay active. It gives me a reason to train, a reason to stay on top of my diet, and probably most importantly, is a LOT of fun to be active with a community that supports each other in accomplishing something that normally wouldn’t be possible.”
There you have it – Dr. Mildren’s top tips for making running a joyful, rewarding part of your life. As he so eloquently puts it, “Running is first and foremost, supposed to be…fun. And to have fun with it.” So, whether you’re tackling your first 5K or your fiftieth ultramarathon, remember to embrace the journey, soak up the magic of TrackTown USA, and run with all your heart.
At Slocum Orthopedics, we’re here to support you every step of the way – because life is meant to be lived in motion. Happy running!
