Surgical Drainage

Surgical Drainage: Procedure, Recovery, and Care

Surgical drainage is a procedure used to remove fluid, blood, or pus that has collected in the body, often as a result of injury, infection, or inflammation. It is commonly used to treat hematomas (pockets of blood) or abscesses (localized infections), including those in the hand or fingers.

The procedure typically involves making a small incision to release the trapped fluid, followed by cleaning the area and applying a dressing. In some cases, a drain may be left in place temporarily to allow further fluid to escape.

Recovery includes wound care, monitoring for signs of infection, and keeping the area clean and dry. Most patients heal well with proper care and follow-up.
