Xiaflex Injection

What is a Xiaflex Injection?

Dupuytren contracture occurs when a layer of tissue beneath the skin of the palm, called the palmar fascia, thickens and forms cords that gradually pull one or more fingers into a bent position.

Xiaflex® is a nonsurgical treatment for selected patients with Dupuytren contracture. The treatment uses an enzyme to break down the diseased tissue beneath the skin, making it possible to improve finger motion without surgery.

Treatment is completed in the office over two visits. The goal is to improve finger extension and hand function while avoiding an operation.

Xiaflex Injection Procedure

Xiaflex treatment is completed over two office visits.

During the first visit, your provider injects Xiaflex into the diseased palmar fascia to weaken the thickened tissue. Your hand is then wrapped in a bandage until your follow-up appointment.

At the second visit, your hand is numbed and the affected fingers are gently manipulated to restore motion after the medication has weakened the diseased tissue.

Before treatment, your provider will explain the procedure, answer your questions, and discuss what to expect during recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is a Xiaflex injection recommended?

Xiaflex may be recommended for patients whose Dupuytren contracture has progressed to the point that finger motion is limited.

How many appointments are required?

Treatment is completed over two office visits. The first visit includes the injection, and the second visit involves manipulation of the fingers to restore motion.

What happens during the first visit?

During the first appointment, Xiaflex is injected into the diseased palmar fascia to weaken the thickened tissue. Your hand is then wrapped in a bandage until the follow-up visit.

What happens during the second visit?

At the second appointment, your hand is numbed and the affected fingers are gently manipulated to restore motion after the medication has weakened the diseased tissue.

What should I expect after treatment?

Bruising, swelling, and blistering are common side effects and occur to some degree in many patients following treatment.

When can I return to gripping activities?

Most patients return to gripping activities within approximately two to four weeks.

Can Dupuytren contracture return after Xiaflex treatment?

Yes. Like needle fasciotomy, Xiaflex has approximately a 50% chance of recurrence within three to five years. If the contracture returns, treatment may be repeated.

What are the risks of Xiaflex injections?

    Potential risks include:

  • Skin tearing during finger manipulation
  • Injury to nearby tendons
  • Injury to nearby nerves

Your provider will discuss the potential risks and benefits before treatment.

Is a Xiaflex Injection Right for You?

Xiaflex may be appropriate for patients whose Dupuytren contracture has progressed to the point that finger motion is limited. You may be a candidate if:

  • One or more fingers cannot fully straighten
  • The contracture is interfering with daily activities
  • You are interested in a nonsurgical treatment option

Your provider will determine whether Xiaflex is appropriate based on your contracture, symptoms, and treatment goals.
