de Quervain’s Tenosynovitis: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatments

De Quervain’s tenosynovitis, also called radial styloid tenosynovitis, is a painful condition that affects the tendons on the thumb side of the wrist. When these tendons become inflamed, it can cause pain and restricted mobility. The condition often develops from repetitive hand and wrist activities such as gripping, lifting, or frequent thumb motions.

Symptoms include pain, swelling, and tenderness at the base of the thumb that may radiate up the forearm. The pain often worsens with thumb and wrist movements, making daily activities more difficult. If left untreated, it may lead to a weakened grip and limited range of motion.

Treatment options may include rest, immobilization with a splint or brace, ice therapy, anti-inflammatory medications, and physical therapy. In more severe cases, corticosteroid injections or surgery may be required. With early diagnosis and treatment, most people are able to reduce pain and restore normal hand function.
