Dupuytren Release

Slocum Orthopedics performs Dupuytren release for patients whose fingers have become fixed in a bent position due to Dupuytren contracture. Our hand and wrist specialists perform this outpatient procedure to remove diseased tissue, improve finger motion, and restore hand function.

What is Dupuytren Release?

Dupuytren release is an outpatient surgical procedure that removes the diseased tissue responsible for Dupuytren contracture. The thickened palmar fascia that prevents the fingers from straightening is removed to improve finger extension and hand function.

Dupuytren Release Procedure

Dupuytren release is performed as an outpatient procedure to remove diseased tissue from the palm and affected fingers. Following surgery, the fingers are held in a straight position using a half cast for approximately one week.

After the cast is removed, hand therapy begins and a splint is worn full time for the next month. Nighttime splinting continues for an additional month.

Most patients return to gripping activities in approximately two months.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is Dupuytren release usually recommended?

It is typically recommended when one or more fingers become stuck in a bent position and the contracture interferes with daily activities.

Does the procedure require an overnight stay?

No. Dupuytren release is an outpatient procedure.

What is recovery like after Dupuytren release?

After the surgery, your fingers will be placed in a straight (extended) position using a half cast for about one week to allow proper healing. Once the cast is removed, you’ll begin hand therapy and wear a splint full-time for the next month, followed by nighttime splinting for an additional month.

You can typically return to gripping activities within two months.

Can Dupuytren contracture return after surgery?

Surgery reduces recurrence in the treated fingers compared with nonsurgical treatment, but the condition can return in the same or different fingers.
