Slocum Orthopedics is proud to welcome Megan Kunkel, MD, to our growing team of Sports Medicine specialists. Dr. Kunkel brings a patient-centered approach grounded in clinical excellence, compassion, and a lifelong love of movement.

A Focus on Whole-Person Care

Dr. Kunkel specializes in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of musculoskeletal injuries in athletes and active individuals of all ages. With experience covering endurance events such as marathons and ultramarathons, as well as team-based athletics, she understands firsthand the physical and mental challenges that come with injury, and the importance of returning to activity stronger than before.

In addition to her clinical focus, Dr. Kunkel has specialized training in the use of ultrasound for both diagnostic insight and in-office procedures, helping patients receive timely, comfortable, and effective care.

“I believe deeply in the principle of exercise as medicine,” she shares. “Whether it’s a student-athlete or a weekend warrior, my goal is to support lifelong wellness through movement.”

A Journey Rooted in Athletics

Dr. Kunkel earned her Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Sciences, magna cum laude, from Colorado State University, followed by her medical degree at the University of Colorado School of Medicine in Aurora. She completed her pediatric residency at Children’s Hospital Colorado and went on to complete a fellowship in Primary Care Sports Medicine at Nationwide Children’s Hospital.

She is board certified by the American Board of Pediatrics and holds a Certificate of Added Qualification in Sports Medicine, reflecting her advanced training in the field. She is also a member of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine.

Getting to Know Dr. Kunkel

As an athlete herself, Dr. Kunkel’s interest in medicine is rooted in her own experiences with movement, injury, and recovery. That personal perspective informs the way she partners with patients, whether they’re navigating a new injury or managing a chronic condition.

Outside of work, Dr. Kunkel and her husband enjoy staying active in Oregon’s great outdoors. Whether trail running, hiking, skiing, or paddleboarding, they make the most of the Pacific Northwest lifestyle. She also enjoys board games, reading, and spending time with family and friends.

Slocum is thrilled to welcome Dr. Kunkel to our Sports Medicine team. Her blend of technical skill and collaborative spirit makes her a perfect fit for our patient-first culture.
